This is a great half day trip for those that want the experience of hiking a volcano without having to spend the time and energy required for Acatenango. Although this is an active volcano you should not expect to see lava flow as safety only allows the guides to bring visitors to a viewpoint just below the summit. However, you will cross some lava fields where you can toast marshmallows in the hot rocks! This is a moderate trek with about one and a half hours uphill to the viewpoint. The terrain is filled with lots of dirt and dust so closed toed shoes are recommended. The price includes roundtrip transportation (about 2 hours each way) and your guide for the hike. You will need to bring: 2 liters of water, snacks, and a flashlight. The tour takes about six hours door to door and runs twice a day at 6:00am and 2:00pm. We recommend the afternoon tour as the sunset is spectacular, although during the rainy season (May-Oct) you may want to go in the morning as the afternoons are the rainy times. The altitude of Pacaya is 8,000 feet.
**You will be required to pay Q50 (around $7) upon entrance to the national park, this is not included in the price.
